freedom
Freedom means being able to think, choose, and act independently without constraint and is arguably one of the basic human rights. Total freedom of the individual, without a sense of responsibility or self-restraint, soon infringes on the freedom of others and therefore freedom of the individual in a society involves some measure of regulation and boundaries.
These boundaries are not universally agreed or fixed and so the discussion of freedom and rights is ongoing, as one person’s freedom impacts on another’s. Freedom of choice, religious freedom and political freedom, freedom of the press, and freedom of information are the subject of ongoing debate, as understanding of these vary between governments, religions and countries.
Freedom and its synonym liberty involve rights, marking out of boundaries and territory, and liberation of those whose freedom has been taken away. Freedom is emotive, raising passion and argument — it rarely seems to be about "live and let live" or "win/win".
