Best Buy to Carry Vinyl?
http://vinylcast.net/?p=115The vinyl lovers on the net are all a flutter… but are they happy? Sure maybe, maybe some like to be unique, but they cannot deny, vinyl records are coming back, but probably not taking over. Best Buy announced that it would start stocking vinyl records at select stores recently. According to the Star Tribune: Toe-tappers snapped up nearly 1 million records last year, a 15 percent increase and the highest level in three years, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Though the LP never lost its luster to many audiophiles and the handful of independent music stores that kept healthy numbers of them in stock, mainstream retailers now are getting into the act. The most recent is Richfield-based Best Buy Co. Inc., which is launching a pilot project at an undisclosed number of stores. “We’ve got an executive here who’s basically responding to his own children and is sponsoring a test to see if there’s a market,” said Best Buy CEO Brad Anderson, 59, with a big belly laugh, adding, “As an old vinyl collector, this is close to my heart.” Amen, Best Buy!

a blast from the past
http://rhymehistory.blogspot.com/2008/07/blast-from-past.htm...Contractive trends revive the past. Certainly, we see in expansive trends - especially near the culmination of an expansive trend - a surge in nostalgia. That is celebratory. In the contractive trend the past comes to the fore in a different way. People reject the technology, as discussed in several previous posts. They go back to the simple life. They want to get in touch with nature, the past, their roots. The old ways resurge in popularity. Here we see the revival of vinyl, which was always a superior sound to digital. "Holy crap: Best Buy will start selling vinyl records at an undisclosed number of test stores, the Strib's Jackie Crosby writes. Vinyl sounds "warm," and covers look "fun," one aficionado gushes. Rap and hip-hop deserve a lot of the credit. The local indies who kept the format alive say they'll survive the mainstream onslaught. Electric Fetus has tripled its vinyl section in 18 months." I predict a further trend beyond what can be explained by rappers or indie musicians. Hell, I want vinyl, too. This is similar to what we've been discussing in previous posts. The trends of opposite direction - expansive and contractive - form a whole. Our psychology and behavior changes in these two trends that raise and settle issues. Trends come in different degrees. Some icons, symbols, and issues are short lived, others are long lived. People are beginning to seek out the old ways, as with vinyl. (No, I don't think they'll want the 8-track player in their car; they're not stupid.) In the next few posts we'll be looking at how many people misinterpret trends as they make the headlines.

Best Buy Going For Warmer, Fuller Sound [Spin The Black Circle [redux]]
http://idolator.com/398104/best-buy-going-for-warmer-fuller-...Best Buy Going For Warmer, Fuller Sound Hey, independent music stores: Did you think for a minute you had the vinyl market to yourselves? With the vinyl market as the only physical portion of the biz that improved last year (nearly a million new vinyl albums were sold, up 15 percent), did you think the big boys wouldn't notice? Well, they have: Best Buy is looking into the vinyl biz, testing the format in several of their stores. Obviously, Best Buy doesn't expect record sales to become a huge portion of their business, but at very least, it keeps kids out of those pesky local stores. [Minneapolis Star Tribune]
