Atomic Club Approves US-India Nuclear Material Technology Deal

VIENNA, Austria - The U.S. gained key international backing Saturday for a bitterly contested plan to sell peaceful nuclear technology to India _ a South Asia powerhouse that has tested atomic weapons but has refused to sign global nonproliferation accords. Washington said the landmark deal, which still needs U.S. congressional approval, will place India's nuclear program under closer scrutiny. But detractors warned it could set a dangerous precedent in efforts to rid the world of weapons of mass destruction.

The Good The Bad And The Nukes.
http://politicaltimesdaily.org/2008/09/30/the-good-the-bad-a...India, our South Asian neighbor is set to receive an influx of civilian nuclear hardware from France, Russia and even America. In a move which contradicts American policies toward nuclear proliferation in North Korea and Iran, the Bush administration, which pushed for this deal since 2005, is seemingly completely at ease with the prospect of allowing India to expand its nuclear power industry without requiring the nation to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The deal, already approved by the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group, required the lifting of the 34 year old American atomic trade ban placed on India in response to its first atomic weapons test in 1974. This was done by the U.S. House of Representatives this past week requiring only Senate approval to place it before the President. This uneven approach to nuclear proliferation not only sets precedent for other nations to do the same but damages Americas ability to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of dangerous regimes around the world. The Bush administrations policy of preemptive aggression and now its contradictory standards for nuclear proliferation must be reversed by the next administration in order to restore Americas ability to lead by example in world affairs.
